I am not trolling. Seriously I just watched this movie for the second time (the first time being when i was ~6) and I'm having a really hard time grasping why people like it so much. It seems to have a huge cultish following among the nerd community. I've heard lines quoted from it over and over again. When those lines came up in the movie, I sat there stonefaced, wondering how anyone could find such poorly timed/delivered lines funny or memorable.
The acting was awful. I mean good god. The characters were bland and uninteresting. Cary Elwes, Andre the Giant, and those Jewish wizards were truly painful to watch. Mandy Patinkin was good though.
It seemed like everything that was intended to be funny missed the mark by a thousand miles. And I couldn't have cared less about what happened or why it was happening.
I feel like I should've liked this movie. I liked it way back when, and people whom I have mutual shared interests with like it as well. I enjoy this genre of movie, and have no problems suspending disbelief or revelling in a fantastical/figurative setting. I am aware that comedy and tastes in various art forms is entirely subjective, but I thought this movie was just awful. I really want someone to try to explain to me what I missed, or why they like this movie so much.
Maybe the fact that you had heard so much about it, including many of the lines, ruined it for you already. Perhaps if you had seen it having never known those things you would have liked it more.
But not everyone likes the same movies. Everyone has a different type of humor. Yours just didn't mesh with this movie's. For many people, it does. I find almost every line in this movie memorable. Yes, in sort of a cheesy way, but after all it's only a fantasy tale.
But honestly, the acting is very good. Especially Vizzini.
'Have You Ever Heard of Plato? Aristotle? Socrates? Morons!'
I love, love ,love this movie. It has everything! It is my default favorite movie, too. I don't understand how you can't understand why it is so popular. It is a classic!!
do you not see subtle humor , spoof humor , puns and sarcastic humor when you see it ??
you have GOT to see this movie and pay attention to it . Most of this move is classic dialog and will never be matched again and people who really GOT this movie have fun quoting favorite lines from it with glee.
Pay attention to this movie next time and watch it with a little less skepticism, you will enjoy it immensely.
i dont get why you think its followed by nerds? everyone i know and have known loves this movie. when i was in high school they had a showing of this movie in the auditorium and hella people showed up but not a whole lot of the band geeks or kids that hung out in the library at lunch. mostly every person you would consider normal or cool in high school went to see it cause its such an awesome fv€king movie.
and the acting isn't awful at all. it's simple and straightforward. that in no way means the characters were bland (inconceivable actually) because they were hilarious and amazing in the way they all had something to accomplish, they got it done, and the story moves on. you gotta remember that this is a story, a fairy tale, not meant to delve into the depths of characters but into the story itself the characters are there to entertain and push the plot along. most movies nowadays are what you're looking for, deep characters who drive the movie along where the plot and story are secondary to them learning something about themselves and developing throughout the movie but this here is a fable, and one of epic proportions.
so get used to that, watch it again, and maybe that new perspective will change how you feel.
First off, the book is so darn good. It was one of those instant cult classics and is very cleverly written, with lots of wry humor, so for fans of that genre, we are predisposed to like the movie. Now they could have ruined the movie but they did not, the casting was good, writing was faithful to the book, and most of the lines translated very well from novel to screenplay. That is why you will hear people quote with such delight lines like, "Truly you have a dizzying intellect" and, "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." But if you are not a fan of the book then I don't see how you would get as much from the movie.
