I dont think so. I think they handled the scene pretty well. The death happened offscreen and we didnt even hear it happen. No blood, no gore, no screams. It could be seen as a pretty frightening moment, but nothing too traumatic for young kids. Plus its all over pretty quickly.
That scene definitely catches the viewer off guard...I was in the 6th grade when I first saw the movie and I have to say it kind of disturbed me lol. Also, putting a character's death in the very beginning of the movie is kind of odd, so that adds to the disturbing-ness as well.

You didn't see it. You didn't see all his little brothers and sisters get eaten either. It would have been too horrific to show that.
