The film at times felt like it was a script that seemed written for "Die Hard" in mind including the set-up, and the character traits and actions of Mike Banning which reeked of John McClane including the propensity of pissing people off, a one-liner threat at a bad guy ("going to put a knife in your brain) and his resourcefulness.
It wouldn't shock me if the writers tried to pitch this for "Die Hard", and given how Die Hard 5 was, this would have been a much more better 5th sequel. Heck, it's better than "Live Free or Die Hard" considering Fuqua can actually direct action.
