When I first watched this film, I thought it was amazing, really enjoyed it and was quite on edge as it was a really well made film with especially great music to compliment its action and twists.
However, unlike other films that I have enjoyed in the past, I have found this film has poor re-watchability, obviously meaning that it becomes a less enjoyable and slightly poorer film with each viewing.
Don't get me wrong, I haven't abused the dvd any more than any other decent film I've re-watched in the past. But I find that the action seems to let the film take a dumbed down way out of confronting defence systems, the constant explaining of the dream worlds etc becomes so dull and derrivitive that you wish they would stop explaining it, as it was pretty obvious anyway, and the tense scenes that build and build with slow motion or music building up and up are now just boring and taking to damn long to get to a decent point.
The ending does not bother me, I still think its a wonderful ending. And I should point out films like Fight Club, Shawshank Redemption, Citizen Kane, anything by Kubrick, anything by Kurosawa, my favorite film American History X and various other films are still enjoyable after tons of viewings, but this film (even though I love the cast and know its a well made film on crew levels) just becomes more and more annoying and boring, and eventually will become unwatchable.
Not enforcing this as anyone's opinion other than my own, but wondering if anyone else has felt this way about this film, or any other films???
It's a shame the movie doesn't move you as strongly as it does many repeat viewers. I've had it on in the background many times just to hear the superb soundtrack. It's even in iTunes to enjoy it on the computer.
As for Ariadne's dialog, it seems clearly meant to be viewers' questions so the answers inform the viewer of the 'rules.' After all, you can't have sci-fi without rules. The only time I felt it was repetitive and didn't impart new knowledge was when she asked about shooting the projections at the snow fortress.
I agree. Nolan's movies are great as a theater experience, but I couldn't even make it through Dark Knight at home even though I had a blast watching it on the big screen. Having recently seen Inception, I've no desire watching it again. It's a very nice little movie and I'm very happy that Nolan's storytelling improves with each film.
Whoa there, 16JellyBeans. In my opinion, Nolan's storytelling has gotten lazier and yet somehow more convoluted as he goes on. Memento is easily his strongest script, thus far, with Insomnia being a nice homage to old-fashioned police thrillers of the 70s, but with some added twists that really worked well. Both of those movies I can watch once every year. Batman Begins offers a lot more fun and intrigue than The Dark Knight too (though, TDK is an amazing film and I don't want to take anything away from it). The Prestige is where he started to throw a lot on screen, but the overall story was pretty thin. That is by far his least re-watchable film to date. The Dark Knight Rises is another film that I have little interest in ever seeing again. It's there, and it ends the series, but it was just too boring and depressing to ever sit through again. Inception, I like for some really great performances, most notably Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard, and can watch a few more times for them and the stellar ending. It does take a bit too long to get there, though, especially after you've seen it once or twice.
