Gladiator is by far one of my favorite movies. It always makes me think of the Christian martyrs of the early Church and there is incredible symbolism in this film. It is so. well. done.
I digress.
Can anyone shed light on why Maximus always reaches down to pick up dirt before he fights someone? I think it is relevant to his character and I'd love to hear other's ideas.

It is like chalk to rock-climbers. It helps him grip his weapon. There is no symbolism that I can think of, but it is a logical solution.
