There are many movies that are just as bad as Twilight, however, not many bad movies are so popular that virtually everyone knows about it. Everywhere I go, teens my age are constantly talking about it. It's basically the law of culture that the more popular a movie is, the more extreme the reviews and reputations are. If Twilight wasn't a best selling book, a 300 million dollar box office picture, then there wouldn't be so much hate. Twilight would simply be a forgotten cult film along with all the other vampire flicks.
The problem is the impressionable girls who read these books and watch these movies are seeing a potential role model who tells them that it's okay to be bland and boring and that they don't have to be strong and assertive and that all they have to do in life is find an abusive boyfriend to cling to.
On a lesser note the books and movies are terrible and if the kids who read/watch them grow accustomed to such poor quality of entertainment they will not demand smart and quality entertainment as they grow older and movies and books in general will suffer from creators having to pander to an audience that is full of stupid people.
Another problem is it's impact on the vampire mythos if the vampires in name only from this franchise leave any impact on the mythology of the creature it would be detrimental because vampires are cool and predatory creatures of the night not whiny mopey dumb kids who wander around on cloudy days and glitter.
It is an obvious attempt to feed into the teenage girl romantic mindset and reinforce the idea of a "soulmate" and "true love". Most teenage girls feel that, when they meet "the one", they will have these powerful overwhelming emotional feelings that will last the rest of their lives. This book reinforces that fallacy and sets many girls up for a lot of pain later.
