Stupid question but why couldn't they just get on a plane and leave? Why did they need a cover story to leave?

They can't leave the country with their American passports, while everyone in the entire country were searching for five Americans! They wouldn't just let them go! If they ever get caught they would torture and kill them. Even with the perfect cover story they almost lost it.
