I didn't understand the point of the secondary story about his son and wife. I understand it was meant to provide him with more of an intriguing character and to encourage the audience to react more strongly towards him however the film wasn't crafted through developed characters and that would be unnecessary. It intrigued people just because they were innocent humans and that is all that mattered (no further back story was required).
I just thought it made the film feel cheaper and more like a 'film' rather then completely absorbing me in the story.
I don't know, what are your opinions?
Argo (2012)
What was the relevance of his family?

I guess it was all a build up to that key moment of the story when Mendez goes against the stand down order and decides to proceed to exfil the 6 embassy people anyway .
It was while on the phone with his son and they talked about movies like Star Wars that gave Mendez the idea to have the cover be location search for a movie.
Also, that one moustached guy didn't trust Tony when he gave him his cover name, Kevin Harkins (?)
It was only until he revealed his real name, Tony Mendes, and that he had a wife and child that he got everyone on-board with the plan.
