I mean how ignorant and stupid was that embassy employee?? You have an angry Islamic mob who have breached the gate to the US Embassy, a mob with signs saying death to America and armed with AK-47s? And he opens the door to embessay because he thought he could reason with those people? How could someone be that stupid???
If he hadn't opened that door more of staff could properly have escaped out the back door.
I don't know, he must have been really confident in his skills of persuasion, maybe he'd listened to some tapes on how to win friends and influence people and was convinced he could talk them down. Wasn't the brightest decision, that's for sure.
That happened in real life. A few weeks before the embassy was taken, students did jump the gate and took over the grounds of the embassy. The people in the embassy got the students to leave when someone went out and talked to them. The difference then was that the Iranian police were there and forced the students to leave.
The people that were taken hostage belived at that time the same thing would happen and that the police would force the students off the grounds of the embassy. But it didn't happen.
And because of that, it changed the way the American (and many other) embassies handle protesters. You don't open doors and now one goes out. If the gates are breached, lock it down and go bunker style.
